Press statement 26/10/16 – The Chocolate Factory, Bristol

 

Generator South West submitted the current application after two years of extensive public consultation and collaboration with the community, which showed that many local people were very keen to see some of the original buildings from the former Chocolate Factory retained.

As a direct result of this, our plans were amended to include the retention of key existing buildings, as well as new build apartment blocks and houses, open space, business starter units, a bar café/restaurant, a dedicated community meeting facility and an upgraded unrestricted access for the site and wider community onto the Bristol to Bath cycle path.  These were all items the local community in Easton said were important to them.

Our plans would make a c.£1million contribution to local infrastructure through the Community Infrastructure Levy and would deliver a wide range of much needed new homes for the city, from 1 bed apartments through to larger family homes on a brownfield site that has stood derelict for over 10 years and been a place for anti-social behaviour.

All these benefits coupled with the extensive demolition, asbestos removal, decontamination, and ground remodelling come at a significant cost and have meant that regrettably it is not viable to provide dedicated affordable housing on site as well.

Previous plans for this site failed because they were not viable.  Discussions with the residents of Easton led to an approach that will provide a sustainable development with a full mix of housing and other benefits for the local community and Bristol as a whole.

Many local people support our plans and have been in touch; keen for us to get on and build out the site, which we hope to be able to do soon.
